National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report reveals that Maharashtra had the highest number — 24,171 cases — of cases registered related to crimes against children in 2024, and in crimes against women, Mumbai registered 6,358 cases, second to Delhi city that had topped the country.

Maharashtra topped crimes against children with 24,171 cases, followed by UP with 22,222 cases.

According to NCRB’s ‘Crime in India 2024’ report, Maharashtra stood second in cases related to crimes against women- 47,954 cases. Mumbai registered the highest number of FIRs concerning crimes against women, Pune was second at 2,631 cases, followed by Nagpur, which recorded 1,513 cases. Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 66,398 cases. 

“The primary presumption that the upward swing in police data indicates an increase in crime and thus a reflection of the ineffectiveness of the police is fallacious,” NCRB stated in the report. 

The cases recorded concerning sexual offences against minors, economic and cyber offences, reflect that the crime in Maharashtra has increased.

In 2023, 8,103 cases were recorded, while in 2024, 9,922 cases were recorded, indicating that cybercrime has increased in Maharashtra. Mumbai alone registered 4,939 cases, and Bangalore topped the list with 17,561 cases. The State recorded 403 cases of cyber stalking and 2,827 cases of cyber fraud. The 27,981 cases have been pending investigation since 2023 and 2024.

Under the Prevention of Corruption Act, the Anti Corruption Bureau recorded 721 cases in 2024, a decrease from last year’s 812. In 2024, the state stood third in economic offences with 20,083 cases; Telangana and Rajasthan recorded 39,127 and 27,637, respectively. Mumbai saw 7,771 economic offences, including criminal breach of trust, forgery, cheating, and fraud.
