Tiruchi Corporation on Monday launched an anti-rabies vaccination camp to administer booster doses to 10,000 stray dogs across the city.

Mayor M. Anbazhagan flagged the camp at the Corporation’s main office in the presence of Corporation Commissioner Veer Pratap Singh, City Health Officer M. Karthikeyan and Deputy Mayor G. Dhivya.

According to a 2025 survey, the stray dog population within city limits was estimated at 43,767. Of these, 20,571 dogs had been sterilised, while 23,196 had not undergone sterilisation.

Following the survey, 8,698 stray dogs were sterilised, vaccinated against rabies and released back to their original locations in 2025. In 2026, another 3,054 stray dogs have been sterilised so far. The Corporation has initiated measures to complete the sterilisation and vaccination of the remaining 11,444 stray dogs within this year.

As anti-rabies vaccines must be administered once every two years to ensure continued protection against the disease, the civic body has organised the camp to identify previously sterilised dogs and provide booster doses. A total of 10,000 stray dogs are targeted for booster vaccination this year. In 2025, booster doses were administered to around 5,000 stray dogs, according to a Corporation press release.
