MADURAI A 50-year-old man identified as Kandasamy, a lorry driver, was murdered by a two-member armed gang on Thursday night. Melur police said that Kandasamy, who lived in Kailampatti village near Melavalavu, was fast asleep in his house. At around 11 p.m., it is said two persons barged into his house and attacked him with deadly weapons. Though, he attempted to escape, he was forcibly caught and fatally assaulted. Melavalavu police sent the body to Melur Government Hospital. A hunt is on to nab the two suspects. Preliminary inquiries revealed that Kandasamy had a rift between his first wife’s son and other relatives over a property share within the family.

College student dies in road accident, another admitted to GRH

A 22-year-old student, studying UG in a college near Chinna Udaippu, died in a road accident on the city outskirts on Friday. Police said that Deva, 22, son of Selvaraj of Pasumalai Vinayaga Nagar, and his friend Rohith, 21, son of Selvaraj of Muthupatti, were studying BBA in a private college. They were going to the college. The bike was driven by Rohith and Deva was on the pillion. As they approached near Perungudi Ganesapuram, the bike hit a speed-breaker. In the impact, both of them were thrown off the bike. With severe injuries, passers by rushed them in ‘108’ emergency ambulance service to the Government Rajaji Hospital. However, Deva died on the way to the hospital. Further investigation is on.

Drunken brawl leads to murder; one held

The Usilampatti police arrested Kavikumar, 26, and are on the lookout for his friend in connection with a murder reported late on Thursday night. Police said that Kavikumar had a rift with his friend Palpandi, 26. They were all consuming liquor behind a cinema house on the Usilampatti-Batlagundu Road. After some time, when they dispersed, Kavikumar again came to the spot with his accomplice Kesavan and stoned Palpandi. He died on the spot. On information, police rushed to the spot. Inquiries led to the arrest of Kavikumar. The police are on the lookout for Kesavan. It is said that Kavikumar’s mother was deputy chairperson of Usilampatti Municipality. Further investigation is on.
