Governor S. Abdul Nazeer launched ‘Mee Intiki – Mee Doctor’ project aimed at providing primary healthcare services at the doorstep during the World Red Cross Day and also the World Thalassemia Day programme held at Lok Bhavan here on Thursday.
The project is aimed at extending medical aid to 5 lakh poor families at the doorsteps in inaccessible areas in seven districts over a period of three years. The medical teams will focus on providing healthcare to pregnant women, children aged 0-6 years, and to bedridden persons who are unable to visit nearby health centres, the Governor said.
He said that World Red Cross Day is observed globally to celebrate the humanitarian efforts of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, honouring the tireless work of volunteers and staff who provide essential services to people in need, particularly during emergencies and disasters.
World Red Cross Day commemorates the birth anniversary of Jean Henry Dunant, the founder of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, who received the first Nobel Prize for Peace in 1901, for his contribution to the movement.
Mr. Abdul Nazeer, who is also the honourable president of the Red Cross Andhra Pradesh State branch, congratulated the District Collectors and presidents of Red Cross district branches of SPSR Nellore, West Godavari, Bapatla, Krishna and Kakinada and other dignitaries for winning the Red Cross Awards. The Governor presented the awards to the winners in recognition of their contributions to the noble cause of the Red Cross movement in the State in the last two years.
The Governor, meanwhile, said that World Thalassemia Day is also observed on the same day, urging to focus on raising awareness and encouraging early screening of the disease.
