Surgeons of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) harvested organs of a youth from Tiruppur district who died of injuries suffered in a road accident.
The hospital management said S. Karuppusamy (22) of Venjamadai near Udumalpet in Tiruppur district was hospitalised after he suffered a severe head injury in a two-wheeler accident on May 10. Karuppusamy, however, did not respond to treatment, and a medical team declared him brain-dead on Tuesday. According to the hospital, the family of the deceased came forward to donate all possible organs.
Surgeons harvested the liver and kidneys of the deceased as per the guidelines of the Transplant Authority, Government of Tamil Nadu (Transtan). As per a statement from the CMCH, Transtan allotted the liver to a private hospital in Coimbatore, one kidney to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital in Salem and the other kidney to another private hospital in Coimbatore for transplantation on needy patients.
CMCH Dean M. Geethanjali, doctors, nurses and other staff paid respects to the deceased, before the body was handed over to the family.
