According to Fire Department officials, a distress call was received at around 10.30 p.m. from a scrap yard in a tin-covered temporary structure in the middle of a residential area. The site is suspected to have been used for illegal dumping of scrap material.
A total of 10 fire engines were pressed into service, with nearly 50 firefighters battling the blaze through the night. While the fire has since been brought under control, cooling operations are still under way to clear residual smoke and prevent any flare-ups.
Preliminary probe suggested the blaze was triggered by an electrical short circuit and quickly spread due to inflammable materials stored inside the structure. A detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause.
