The Union government has warned of possible rogue drone attacks targeting vital installations along the borders, prompting security agencies to work on deploying counter-drone technology systems to safeguard critical assets across the country.

According to official sources, the Marine Security Wing of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways issued the alert on the emerging drone threat at Vital Assets and Vital Installations (VAVIs) located around the land and sea borders.

It was stated that the current geo-political situation across the world had demonstrated that hostile drones could disrupt operations of critical VAVIs. “There is an urgent need to take concrete steps to safeguard our assets, especially those located near the borders from rogue drones by installing Anti-Drone Systems,” the communication said.

Trials started

In view of the emerging threat, the Ministry of Home Affairs had constituted the Anti Rogue Drone Technology Committee in the Border Security Force (BSF) for the evaluation and certification of counter-rogue drone technology systems for deployment in India. The force is in the process of installing anti-drone systems in Punjab along the Pakistan border for which trials had already started, the sources said.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) had also formed a Sub-Committee Board of Officers comprising members from the Defence Research Development Organisation, Intelligence Bureau, Airports Authority of India, BSF and other stakeholders to carry out surveys of VAVIs.

The Anti-Drone Systems would be proposed for installation at VAVIs on the basis of threat assessment and survey report of the committee and with the approval of the Union Home Ministry, the sources said.

First port in India

In February, 2026, the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, had become the first port in the country to initiate the implementation of advanced Anti-Drone System as part of measures to protect the critical port infrastructure. The port signed an agreement with the Central Electronics Limited, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology.

The project involves the deployment of an integrated radio frequency and radar-based drone detection and jamming system, specifically tailored for complex port environments, providing 360-degree coverage and omni-directional bearing. It was aligned with the April Kaal Vision 2047 and Maritime India Vision 2030, aimed at strengthening national safety and maritime resilience by enhancing airspace surveillance.
