A solar-powered borewell project aimed at improving the livelihoods of tribal communities was inaugurated at Gethesal tribal village under Hasanur panchayat in the forest area of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve on Thursday.
Implemented by Sathyamangalam-based non-governmental organisation Rights Education and Development Centre (READ), its director R. Karuppasamy said the project was executed at a cost of ₹6.8 lakh and would directly benefit six tribal farmers in the village.
The farmers, who had been dependent on rainfall for cultivation, were unable to carry out agricultural activities during most parts of the year due to inadequate rainfall, affecting their income and economic condition. With the installation of the solar-powered borewell system, the beneficiaries now have access to a stable water source throughout the year, enabling them to cultivate crops in all seasons. They are expected to take up cultivation of vegetables, grains and other crops, thereby improving their income and food security.
Deputy Director of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve and District Forest Officer, Hasanur Division, Yogesh Kumar Garg, inaugurated the project in the presence of Germalam Forest Ranger Venkatachalam, Hasanur Ecological Forest Ranger Prakash, Jeerahalli Forest Ranger Sakthivel, Forest Department officials and villagers.
Mr. Karuppasamy said the project would help improve the quality of life of tribal families by enabling sustainable agriculture and stable livelihoods. He added that the use of solar energy would reduce electricity costs and contribute to environmental conservation.
