Until Saturday (April 11, 2026), Chennai Super Kings was like King Lear in the storm this IPL — once a Super King, reduced to battling, carrying only the memory of power. Like Lear, it seemed unsure of itself. Nowhere more so than at home, where it had lost six consecutive matches since last season.

But on Saturday (April 11), it was as if CSK had shaken itself awake. Like Odysseus reclaiming Ithaca, it reclaimed Chepauk — a home recognising its own again.

For the fans, the win over Delhi Capitals would have felt like a mirror wiped clean — suddenly, everything looked as it should.

And that is how CSK would feel, too, as it takes on a winless Kolkata Knight Riders at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday (April 14, 2026).

Sanju Samson’s return to form, Ayush Mhatre’s fluency, the impact of debutant Gurjapneet Singh and Jamie Overton — both of whom delivered nagging, back-of-length pace — along with an effective Anshul Kamboj, were the key positives from the last match.

Concerns, however, remain around skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s form and Noor Ahmad not quite operating at his best, reflected in CSK’s spin economy of 11.16, the second-worst this season.

While Dewald Brevis’ return from injury has bolstered CSK’s batting line-up, Dhoni’s comeback, whenever it comes, would provide a turbo boost.

For KKR, the season has resembled the climb of Sisyphus — each push promising progress, only for the weight to roll back again.

While its stacked batting order has struggled with pacing across phases, its bowling reveals a clear imbalance. The seamers have struggled to contain, going at 11.40, the second-worst among all teams. The spinners have operated with a measure of control, conceding 9.27, better by comparison. Between control and excess, KKR oscillates, still searching for balance.

Sunil Narine’s rhythm in the last outing, along with the prospect of Varun Chakaravarthy’s return, should boost the bowling unit’s confidence.

The macro-matchup here is delightfully simple: CSK’s new-look, high-intent batting spine against KKR’s spin core.
