A Flying Squad of the Election Commission seized gold and silver jewellery worth ₹28.54 crore from a car during a vehicle check at T. Nagar on Friday.

The consignment was handed over to Income Tax Department officials after the occupants failed to produce valid documents.

The Flying Squad intercepted the vehicle on Narasimman Street in the Thousand Lights Assembly constituency, where officials, along with the police, were conducting intense checks.

A car passing through the area was stopped and searched, leading to the seizure of a large quantity of gold and silver articles.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that the seized jewellery had been brought from Mumbai by flight for a well-known jewellery shop in the city.

According to data from the Corporation, seizures of cash, narcotics, and gold, amounting to over ₹7.21 crore, were reported across Chennai district between April 5 and April 10.

Of the total ₹7.21 crore, Static Surveillance Teams accounted for ₹4.90 crore, while Flying Squads secured ₹1.52 crore. An additional ₹76.52 lakh was accounted for by other participating departments. Royapuram recorded the highest value of seized goods during this period at ₹1.92 crore. The distribution of seized items varied by constituency: in Thiru.Vi.Ka. Nagar, 7.5 kg of narcotics, valued at ₹3.75 lakh, was intercepted, while 2.4 kg of narcotics and 23 grams of gold, valued at ₹3.38 lakh, were seized at Harbour.

Other significant figures were reported at T. Nagar, at ₹1.42 crore, and Harbour, at ₹1.21 crore, followed by Perambur and Virugambakkam with ₹75.33 lakh and ₹73.57 lakh respectively.

Static Surveillance Team personnel said the heat had made the enforcement of vehicle checks more taxing.

Occasionally, some individuals, usually in an inebriated state, attempted to obstruct the process or leverage their influence to avoid inspection. Despite these challenges, the monitoring remains continuous and intense, election authorities said.
