The last-minute decision to impose an additional ₹10,000 charge on each Haj pilgrim across the country, intended to help airlines cope with rising fuel costs amid the West Asia crisis, has placed an unexpected financial strain on pilgrims.
Despite the sudden burden, most pilgrims have agreed to pay the extra amount without protest. They have arranged the funds through personal means and loans. According to the Central Haj Committee, the decision was made after consultations at various levels.
