Markets across Tiruchi are witnessing a sharp increase in the arrival of jackfruit this season.
With favourable weather conditions and good yields reported from cultivation belts in nearby districts, heaps of fresh jackfruit have begun occupying prominent space in wholesale and retail markets. The jackfruit season, which normally begins in March and continues till July, has picked up pace in recent weeks.
Traders at Gandhi Market say the supply has nearly doubled compared to last year. Jackfruits are being brought in from areas such as Alangudi, Vadakadu, Keeramangalam, Panruti and other regions.
According to vendors, both ripe and tender varieties are witnessing strong demand among customers. “Each summer, jackfruit sales improve, but this season the arrivals are much higher. Prices are also relatively affordable due to increased supply,” said Rajasekaran, a fruit merchant at Gandhi Market.
Depending on the size and quality, a whole jackfruit is being sold between ₹40 and ₹50 at wholesale markets, while retail prices range from ₹80 to ₹100 per kg. Cleaned jackfruit bulbs are also being sold separately for the convenience of customers.
Vendors point out that only around five kg of edible fruit bulbs are obtained from an eight-kg jackfruit after cutting and cleaning.
Roadside vendors have also set up temporary stalls in several parts of the city to attract motorists and passers-by. Murugan, a retail jackfruit seller on Madurai Road, says nearly 250 gm of jackfruit pieces are being sold for ₹100.
Sources attribute the increased arrivals to better yields this year and say farmers remain hopeful that the season would continue to bring steady income over the coming weeks. With summer demand expected to remain strong, traders anticipate brisk business until the end of the season.
