Normal life was thrown out of gear in Puducherry as heavy rain, accompanied by lightning, lashed the region on Friday (May 15, 2026).

Residents of Puducherry woke up to a light drizzle, but as the morning hours passed, the territory began receiving heavy rain, forcing many people to remain indoors.

Office-goers, students, and workers were put to hardship, as the rain started lashing the region at around 10 a.m. Two-wheeler riders had to bear the brunt, with certain pockets in the town and suburban areas getting inundated soon after the rain.

“When I came to the office, there was light rain. But after I stepped out, at around 11.30 a.m, I got caught in heavy rain. The stretch near Latha Steel on East Coast Road was inundated. There was water-logging in several other parts of the town,” said Ravi, an employee with a private firm.

His colleague, Chandrasekhar, said the weather in Puducherry during noon hours on Friday resembled that of Northeast monsoon days. There were reports of power supply disruption in both residential and commercial areas of Puducherry.

District Collector A. Kulothungan said the administration had received warning from the Meteorological Department three hours before the rain started. “The intensity was high for a short duration. Inundation was reported but the water started receding immediately. There were no reports of any untoward incident,” he said.
