Following orders from the Municipal Commissioner, the Health department officers swung into action seizing banned plastic bags from the shops in Bazaar area on Tuesday.

The officers said that they had specific information about the shops, which had banned plastics. Hence, they came to seize and registered cases.

Opposing the searches, some shopkeepers resorted to agitation and shouted slogans against the officers. They said that because of the sudden action, the business was affected and claimed that they had no stocks of banned plastic.

However, the officials seized the banned plastic bags.

In a bid to persuade, Virudhunagar TVK MLA Selvam rushed to the spot. He assured to arrange for a meeting with the Municipal Commissioner following which the merchants dropped the agitation.

The officials continued with their search operations in Desabandu Grounds, Old bus stand, Railway Feeder Road and other places.
