A postgraduate doctor from the General Medicine department at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad was allegedly assaulted by a patient attendant on the evening of Sunday (May 24, 2026) following an argument over checking a patient’s blood sugar levels.

According to members of the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA), the incident took place at around 7.20 p.m. when the attendant requested the duty doctor to check the patient’s random blood sugar (GRBS) level before giving the patient cookies.

“The doctor checked the patient’s sugar levels and informed the attendant about the readings. However, the attendant, who was on a video call at the time, did not pay attention despite the doctor repeating the information multiple times. The attendant was continuously recording the doctor during the interaction. The doctor then took the phone and handed it over to a nurse, following which the attendant slapped him,” the member said.

“The doctor’s spectacles broke and he suffered a small laceration on his forehead. The attendant allegedly attempted to attack the doctor again, following which he restrained her by holding her wrist in self-defence,” the JUDA representative alleged. The attendant later accused the doctor of inappropriate behaviour and attempted to portray the incident differently. A complaint had been lodged with the police and further action was under process.

Following the incident, T-JUDA issued a representation to the Health Minister demanding immediate legal and policy measures to protect healthcare workers. The association demanded the enactment of a dedicated “Telangana Medical Professionals Protection, Safety and Welfare Act”, seeking classification of violence against doctors as a cognisable and non-bailable offence, along with time-bound investigations and trials.
