Delhi Police seek larger Bench reference on UAPA bail

The Delhi Police on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) told the Supreme Court that the question of whether prolonged incarceration and trial delays can override the statutory restrictions on bail under anti-terror laws such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, warrants consideration by a larger Bench in view of two “conflicting” judgments rendered by coordinate Benches. The submission was made before a Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and P.B. Varale during the hearing of a bail plea filed by 2020 Delhi riots accused Abdul Khalid Saifi, founder of the United Against Hate campaign, challenging the September 2, 2025, order of the Delhi High Court denying him bail along with Jawaharlal Nehru University scholars Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12-13, according to a presidential aide. India, as the chair of BRICS, will host the grouping’s annual summit in September. President Putin will take part in the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, Kremlin aide for international affairs Yury Ushakov was quoted as saying by the state-run TASS news agency. He also added that a bilateral meeting between President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping is planned on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi.

Supreme Court allows for euthanasia of ‘rabid and dangerous dogs’

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) refused to modify its November 7, 2025, order directing all States and Union Territories to ensure the removal of stray dogs from high-footfall public institutions, including educational institutions, hospitals, sports complexes, bus depots, and railway stations, while clarifying that such dogs cannot be released back into these areas even after sterilisation. A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and N.V. Anjaria dismissed all applications seeking modification of its earlier directions and also rejected challenges to the 2025 standard operating procedure framed by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), pointing to the “alarming” rise in dog-bite incidents across the country.

Delhi court rejects Umar Khalid’s interim bail plea

A Delhi court on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) dismissed the bail plea of jailed activist Umar Khalid, accused in the 2020 northeast Delhi riots. Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai was hearing Mr. Khalid’s application seeking 15 days of interim bail to attend the 40-day post-death ritual (Chehlum) of his uncle and take care of his mother, who has to undergo surgery. Mr. Khalid and others were booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), an anti-terror law, and provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly being the “masterminds” of the 2020 riots that left 53 people dead and more than 700 injured in northeast Delhi.

Name a country that does not use nuke power for energy needs, asks Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) appeared wary about rocking the boat on a new nuclear law which caps liability at less than ₹4,000 crore even as the petitioner, a retired bureaucrat, reminded the court of its own 40-year-old judgment that held that the “larger and more prosperous” an enterprise carrying on a hazardous activity is, the greater must be the compensation for causing a mishap which may affect thousands of lives. “Name a single country that does not fulfil its energy needs through nuclear plants?” Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, heading a three-judge Bench, asked the petitioner, E.A.S Sarma, a retired IAS officer.

Supreme Court asks MeitY to examine PIL seeking recovery or destruction of stolen personal data of citizens on foreign servers

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) asked the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to consider a PIL as a representation seeking a robust mechanism to recover or destroy the personal data of Indians allegedly stolen and stored on foreign servers. A Bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi was hearing a PIL filed by Nitish Kumar, a cybersecurity consultant. While refusing to entertain the PIL on grounds that it pertained to information technology and had hardly anything to do with legal aspects, the CJI asked the petitioner to approach the government with his grievances.

High Court seeks stand of Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia in criminal contempt case

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) issued notices to AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and others in suo motu contempt proceedings initiated by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma over an alleged scandalous social media campaign targeting her. A bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Ravinder Dudeja issued notice to the politicians on the suo motu contempt case initiated against them by Justice Sharma and granted them four weeks to file their response. “Issue notice. The alleged contemnors will file their response within a period of four weeks from the receipt of notice,” the bench stated, as it listed the case for next hearing on August 4.

Mr. Gandhi posed his query after Norway’s sovereign wealth fund dropped Adani Green from its portfolio in February. “We get very good information these days. Modi ji, did Norway agree to your personal request to remove Adani from their pension fund black list?” Mr. Gandhi said in a post on X. The cutbacks would save 2.4 billion New Zealand dollars (US $1.4 billion) during that period, the Minister told a business audience in New Zealand’s biggest city, Auckland.
