The Salem Corporation has taken steps to collect the pending taxes and water charges to the tune of over ₹200 crore.

The Salem Corporation collects property tax, professional tax, and water charges from the public residing in 60 wards of the Corporation. While the Corporation has been trying to collect 100% tax from the public every year, it has been unable achieve the target due to various reasons. There are 2.15 lakh people who pay property taxes and 1.20 lakh people pay water charges every year.

In the financial year 2025-26, the Salem Corporation collected ₹177.95 crore in taxes in the four zones, which is 60% of its total tax target (₹296.58 crore). In April alone, during the financial year 2026-27, the Corporation collected ₹22 crore as property taxes and water charges.

Salem Corporation is now taking steps to collect the pending tax for the past few years, which is over ₹200 crore. As part of this, it was announced that the tax collection centres at four zonal offices will function on holidays, including Saturdays and Sundays and the public shall pay the taxes at the zonal offices.

Corporation officials said that every financial year, in March alone, the Corporation receives 25% of the taxes. Due to the Assembly elections this year, the staff were unable to focus on tax collection, which resulted in only 60% of the collection. People are also encouraged to pay the taxes online through tnurbanepay.tn.gov.in, officials added.
