Police in all 10 districts and Madurai City Police in South Zone have commenced ‘Operation SHIELDNET’, an intensive preventive policing and crime deterrence operation on Wednesday.
The operation is focused on preventive policing measures, including checking of history sheeters, suspects, execution of non-bailable warrants (NBWs), vehicle checks, bail cancellation efforts, initiation of preventive proceedings under 126 BNSS and strengthen crime prevention mechanisms.
A statement said that on Wednesday, the police had checked 3,295 suspects, including 261 history-sheeters, across South Zone.
During the operation, as many as 33 history-sheeters were arrested in connection with various criminal offences. This also included execution of long standing NBWs against 27 accused by arresting them.
The police also initiated proceedings under Section 126 BNSS against 228 criminals.
They also seized 552 two-wheelers during vehicle checks for not having number plates, rash driving, flickering lights or unlawful modifications of vehicles.
The statement added that special efforts were being taken to systematically identify repeat offenders and to initiate bail cancellation proceedings before judicial forum against those continuing criminal activities while on bail.
Also steps will be taken to closely follow their trial proceedings with a view to secure convictions through the existing case officer initiative.
