Even as visitors continue to flock to Semmozhi Poonga in Coimbatore months after its inauguration, work is still progressing on one of the project’s major components — a convention centre being developed on 10 acres within the 45-acre park campus at a cost of ₹40 crore.
The convention facility forms part of the overall Semmozhi Poonga project being implemented at ₹208 crore. While the park components, excluding the convention centre, were inaugurated in November last and opened for public use, construction and infrastructure works at the convention centre are on.
The convention centre has been designed with a built-up area of 4,830 square metres and seating for 1,000 people. The facility can also function as three separate halls with a seating capacity of around 333 each.
The structure includes a separate access route for dignitaries, dining hall, conference hall, guest rooms and other amenities.
Officials said air-conditioning works have been completed at the convention centre, while installation of audio and video systems is under way. Furniture procurement and related infrastructure development works are also in progress.
Ceiling works, side panelling and associated interior arrangements are currently being carried out. Officials said flooring and seating installation will be taken up in the next phase.
According to officials, around 90% of the overall work on the convention centre has been completed so far.
According to Corporation decisions announced earlier, the daily rental for the entire facility has been fixed at ₹2.99 lakh, while use of a single section will cost ₹99,770 per day. A refundable caution deposit equivalent to 25% of the rental amount will also be collected.
Users will have to bear additional charges including ₹5,000 per day towards cleaning and electricity charges at ₹13 per unit consumed.
