Mysuru zoo rolls out action plan over avian influenza scare
2026-05-06 · via The Hindu: Latest News today from India and the World, Breaking news, Top Headlines and Trending News Videos.

With H5N1 bird flu confirmed in dead peacocks in villages in Tumakuru, the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, as a precautionary measure, has rolled out an action plan to prevent, control and contain avian influenza across its facilities, including Karanji Lake Nature Park and the Chamundi Wild Animals Rescue Centre at Koorgalli.

The zoo management on Wednesday said it has enforced strict biosecurity and surveillance measures to minimise the risk of an outbreak.

Disinfection protocols have been made mandatory at all entry gates. Vehicles entering the zoo through Gate 2 are required to pass through disinfectant dips, while foot dips have been installed for staff and visitors at entry gates and animal enclosures. The use of hand sanitisers has also been made compulsory before and after handling animals, feed and waste, said Zoo Executive Director P. Anusha.

Clinical surveillance has been strengthened, with animal keepers sensitised to identify abnormal symptoms and veterinarians conducting daily inspections. Staff at Karanji Lake have been instructed to immediately report any deaths among migratory birds. Serological surveillance of captive and migratory birds will also be carried out as per advice from scientists, she said, in a release.

As part of feeding protocols, live poultry brought to the zoo will be examined for signs of disease. Only after veterinary clearance will the birds be processed, disinfected using potassium permanganate solution and hot water, and then fed to animals. In case of a bird flu threat in the Mysuru region, authorities have advised sourcing processed chicken from reputed suppliers to avoid infection risks.

The zoo has also suggested movement restrictions for staff during high-risk situations. Inter-sectional movement of personnel will be banned, and staff will be prohibited from visiting poultry farms, bird sanctuaries or other zoos until the situation stabilises.

A Rapid Response Team comprising a veterinarian, lab technician and four animal keepers has been constituted to act in case of an outbreak, including safe disposal of infected stock.
