Apollo Hospital doctors successfully treat woman with VAB...

Apollo Speciality Hospital doctors in Madurai on Tuesday successfully treated a 20-year-old woman from Tenkasi with a minimally invasive Vacuum-Assisted Breast Biopsy (VABB) procedure offering a scar-free alternative to conventional breast surgery. The doctors removed Breast Fibroadenoma using a scar-free vacuum-assisted procedure.

According to a press statement, the patient presented with mild pain and swelling in her left breast for four months. An ultrasound examination suggested a fibroadenoma, a common benign breast tumour, following which she was referred to Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Madurai, for further evaluation and management.

To avoid conventional surgery and achieve a superior cosmetic outcome, the patient was advised to undergo a VABB procedure through the Department of Interventional Radiology. VABB is a minimally invasive, image-guided technique that enables the removal of selected benign breast lumps through a tiny skin incision, often without the need for stitches.

After a detailed clinical assessment and imaging evaluation, the patient underwent the procedure under ultrasound guidance. During the intervention, advanced ultrasound imaging was used to accurately localise the fibroadenoma. A specialised vacuum-assisted device was then used to precisely remove the lump under local anaesthesia. The procedure was completed successfully without any intraoperative or periprocedural complications.

VABB offers several advantages over traditional open surgery, including minimal scarring, reduced pain, shorter recovery time, faster return to daily activities, and excellent cosmetic outcomes. It is particularly beneficial for young women who are concerned about breast appearance and wish to avoid unnecessary surgery.

Consultant - Interventional Radiology K. B. Santhosh Babu, Medical Oncologist, T. Deenadayalan, Gynecologist Raghavi Natarajan, Senior Anaesthetist Abdul Kadher, Chief Operating Officer Nikhil Tiwari and Medical Head P. Shobana were present.
