The Coimbatore Corporation is constructing a paralympic sports complex in the city at Jeeva Nagar near Kavundampalayam at ₹9.9 crore on Corporation-owned land.
In the first phase, the complex will have 42,764.71 sq. ft., comprising ground and mezzanine floor.
A senior Corporation official said levelling works at the site were over and excavation for the basement was taken up. During digging, workers found layers of garbage dumped up to a depth of around 10 feet, as the area was reportedly used as a dumping yard several years ago before it came within Corporation limits.
“We had to carefully excavate and remove the waste before proceeding,” the official said.
According to Corporation officials, the first phase will include indoor facilities for sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, boccia, badminton, and table tennis. The ground floor, with a built-up area of 24,949.12 sq. ft., will house play areas, team locker rooms and other facilities, while the mezzanine floor will include a multi-gym, yoga room, sitting volleyball courts and a first-aid medical room. Parking space for five buses, 25 cars, and 74 two-wheelers is also planned for development under the first phase.
Outdoor para-athletics events such as javelin throw, discus throw, shot put and club throw are planned in the second phase of the project.
The official said the project will be completed within a year.
