Dindigul Corporation, as part of its awareness initiative, has begun planting flowering plants on the roadsides and public places to prevent people from throwing garbage in the open.
Dindigul Corporation comprises 48 wards. The authorities have also begun displaying banners with the message urging the public not to dump waste in the open and instead hand over the waste to sanitary workers and make use of the door-to-door collection of waste system.
Despite this, people were still dumping waste in public spaces which led to foul odour, unsanitary conditions, and the risk of spreading infectious diseases.
In order to prevent people from dumping waste in the open, the Corporation authorities have launched the initiative. The officials have identified the spots where there was dumping of garbage in the open and began implementing the creative and innovative awareness measures at these locations.
The Corporation team removed garbage from the roadside and planted flowering plants in the place. Similar innovative awareness drives are being conducted across the city.
In the first phase, 24 locations across 48 wards where garbage dumping was rampant have been identified. The authorities have taken up cleaning and fencing the place along with displaying the awareness message.
The authorities have urged the public to cooperate with the Corporation and create a garbage-free city. People should refrain from dumping waste on the streets, the authorities said.
Earlier, Corporation authorities said anyone violating rules would be imposed a fine of ₹10,000. Unauthorised hoardings would attract fines and strict action, they said.
