Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) chief Kalvakuntla Kavitha was arrested on Friday during a protest in front of the Secretariat against the State government’s handling of the ongoing paddy procurement issues.
Leading a large demonstration, along with TRS workers and women supporters, Ms. Kavitha staged a sit-in and symbolically poured paddy on the road to highlight the plight of farmers allegedly suffering due to delayed procurement operations.
Police intervened and detained her and several other party leaders and shifted them to the Falaknuma Police Station before releasing later.
Addressing the media before her arrest, Ms. Kavitha accused the government of displaying a “cruel and indifferent” attitude towards farmers. She alleged that several distressed farmers were dying on harvested grain heaps while waiting for procurement due to administrative negligence.
Criticising the government, she said that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had failed to conduct even a single review meeting on Agriculture Department during the last two-and-a-half years.
