Madanapalle Institute of Technology and Science (MITS), a deemed-to-be university in Annamayya district, has filed an application seeking a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Ananthapur Banana variety, Vice-Chancellor Dr. C. Yuvaraj said on Saturday (May 16, 2026).
According to a press release, the application was submitted with support from the MITS Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre. The university stated that the banana variety is known for its uniform size, yellow color, sweet taste, aroma, and longer shelf life, which are linked to Ananthapur’s agro-climatic conditions. GI recognition is expected to protect the product name, improve farmers’ incomes, and strengthen the domestic and international market value of the fruit.
