Posters carrying details of candidates pasted at polling stations in government schools have not been removed.

A total of 3,540 polling stations had been set up in the district for the Assembly election, with a large number of them located in government schools. At each polling station, posters displaying details of candidates, their symbols and their position on the voting machine had been pasted near the entrance.

Polling was held on April 23. By the next day, the voting machines had been moved out.

However, the posters have not been removed from several school premises. This comes despite demands from educationists that school campuses be handed back in a clean condition after the election.

S. Chandrasekar, Coimbatore coordinator of the Palli Kalvi Pathukaapu Iyyakam, said various materials, including posters and awareness notices, were used on school campuses during polling. While polling remains the focus on the day of the election, it is important to ensure that such materials, along with waste generated during the election duty, are cleared afterwards, he said.

He said that in many schools across the city and district, cleaning has not been carried out after polling. He urged district officials to take steps to restore the campuses of government schools used as polling stations to their original condition.

Chief Education Officer R. Balamurali said cleaning work was under way and that posters remained only in a few schools. He said the headmasters concerned would coordinate with local bodies to ensure that the premises are cleared before reopening.
