Instead of reducing the size of the convoys, which does not save enough fuel, the state government should focus on enhancing the public transport system, as maximum fuel savings can be achieved only when there is efficient public transport in towns and villages, said the Taxpayers’ Association on Tuesday (May 19, 2026).

Addressing the media in Vijayawada, the association members, M.V. Anjaneyulu and V. Sambi Reddy, said following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for fuel conservation, the State government announced several cost-saving measures.

But, fuel can be saved only when the government will focus on obliterating the need for private vehicles by developing a robust public transport system, Mr. Anjaneyulu said. The members sent memorandums via email to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu detailing the same.

Citing the example of Luxembourg, a country in Europe, which saved large amounts of fuel by introducing free public transport across the country, the members pointed out that a well-organised and free public transport system can encourage even wealthy citizens to use public transportation instead of their own vehicles.

The association said that the increasing number of private vehicles has caused an uptick in fuel demand, and also numerous other urban problems. They urged the government to take corrective measures immediately.

The association also urged the State government to develop good road infrastructure connecting all small towns and villages, introduce city bus services on all streets in urban areas, and, for Vijayawada, demanded that the city bus be connected to every location, with the number of city buses increased in accordance with public demand.
