The Puducherry government has re-allotted around 51 acres of land in Sedarapet to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) for the establishment of a Centre for Trauma Care and Rehabilitation with an air ambulance facility and a Centre for Organ Transplantation, at a combined cost of around ₹1,000 crore.

A release from JIPMER said the land was originally allotted to it in 2018 for the development of advanced healthcare and academic facilities. Following this, the institute had taken up preparatory work. However, the project underwent administrative revision after the land was taken back by the government in 2022, the release stated.

Thanking Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy for the re-allotment of the land, JIPMER said the formal handover of the land documents on Tuesday (June 23, 2026) marked the realisation of a long-standing institutional vision. With a combined investment of nearly ₹1,000 crore, the two centres are expected to significantly enhance JIPMER’s capability to provide specialised and affordable tertiary healthcare services to patients in Puducherry and other States, the release said.

The Centre for Trauma Care and Rehabilitation with an air ambulance facility, with an estimated investment of ₹425 crore, will be developed in around 25.4 crores. The facility is planned with a capacity of 250 beds, including intensive care units, high-dependency units, dedicated trauma bays, emergency observation wards, rehabilitation services, and 10 advanced operation theatres, the release said.

One of the key features of the trauma care centre will be a dedicated helipad to operate air ambulance, enabling rapid transportation of critically injured patients and emergency medical intervention. The centre will bring together trauma surgery, emergency medicine, critical care, rehabilitation medicine, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, psychiatry, and allied specialities under one roof, the release said.

The institute has already been serving as a referral centre for trauma patients from Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and neighbouring States. Now, in addition to patient care, the centre will serve as a national hub for training, research, trauma prevention programmes, disaster preparedness, and manpower development in trauma and emergency medicine, the release said.

The Centre for Organ Transplantation with a capital outlay of ₹550 crore is envisioned as a comprehensive regional hub for organ, tissue transplantation, and transplant sciences. The facility will have a planned capacity of 400 beds, including specialised transplant wards, intensive care units, high-dependency units, advanced diagnostic facilities, and 14 operation theatres, JIPMER said.

“The centre will support both deceased donor and living donor transplantation programmes. It will have specialised divisions dedicated to kidney, liver, heart, lung, bone marrow, and reconstructive tissue transplantation. The centre will also function as a regional hub for organ sharing, transplant coordination, organ and tissue banking, advanced training for translational research and capacity building programmes,” the release said.

With the creation of around 3,000 direct employment opportunities and hundreds of indirect jobs, the Sedarapet campus was poised to transform the region into a major healthcare, education, research, and economic growth hub of Puducherry, JIPMER said.
