Riding a fierce anti incumbency wave, the United Democratic Front (UDF) on Monday scripted a clean sweep in Kottayam, winning all nine seats in the district in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The Congress led coalition, which had lost its grip over the district following the exit of Kerala Congress (M) ahead of the 2021 polls, staged a dramatic comeback by unseating five sitting MLAs of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). The rout was total, with all LDF candidates, including Minister V.N. Vasavan, suffering defeat. Mr. Vasavan, a member of the CPM State secretariat, lost to DCC president Nattakom Suresh by a margin of 19,752 votes.
