A pair of Asiatic lions has arrived at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur, from Indore Zoo as part of an animal exchange programme aimed at strengthening conservation breeding and enhancing visitor experience.
According to an official release, the newly arrived lions are expected to enhance the existing lion safari at the zoo and offer visitors an opportunity to observe the species.
Zoo authorities said the introduction of the Asiatic lions would help improve breeding quality, maintain genetic diversity, and support conservation efforts for the species in captivity.

The arrival of the lions also comes months after the death of Veera, a 14-year-old lion at the zoo, in 2025. Veera had been suffering from hip dysplasia from a young age and had remained recumbent for nearly a month while under intensive veterinary care before it died.
Mandatory quarantine
As part of standard animal health and zoo management protocols, the newly arrived lions will undergo a mandatory four-week quarantine under the supervision of veterinarians and animal keepers. Following the quarantine and health assessment procedures, the animals will be introduced into the enclosure for public viewing.
The zoo has also received a pair of Egyptian vultures and a female Red Jungle Fowl from Indore Zoo under the same exchange programme. In return, the Vandalur zoo has transferred one hippopotamus, two ostriches, and four yellow anacondas to the Indore zoo.
Zoo officials said the exchange programme would strengthen cooperation between zoological institutions in the areas of wildlife conservation, species management, and conservation breeding.
