Avasara Police 100, afilm byK. Bhagyaraj, who passed away at 73 on June 27, 2026, has a unique M G Ramachandran (MGR) connection, apart from the fact that the legendary actor featured in it. The 1990 Tamil film, written and directed by Bhagyaraj, was inspired by a shelved film of MGR.

The story goes that MGR began shooting for a film titled Anna Nee En Deivam (1977), directed by C V Sridhar. The movie was shelved after 4,000 feet (1200m) as MGR quit cinema to serve his role as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister.
Years later, Bhagyaraj decided to revive the project to help producer Duraisamy recover financial losses. Having watched the footage of Anna Nee En Deivam, Bhagyaraj was keen on delivering a fresh movie.

Thus began Avasara Police 100, which was launched with the permission of MGR. Bhagyaraj incorporated around 4,000 feet (1200 m) of Anna Nee En Deivam in the movie. MGR’s character from the shelved project was weaved into Avasara Police 100.
Bhagyaraj roped in M N Nambiar, V S Raghavan, and Sangeetha for Avasara Police 100, who were part of the canned movie. Latha - the female lead of Anna Nee En Deivam - wasn’t able to be part of the project as the actor had quit the film industry post marriage.

Avasara Police 100 was launched at AVM Studios in the presence of MGR, who was invited as chief guest. MS Viswanathan and Bhagyaraj worked on the music of the movie. Gautami and Silk Smitha were the other prominent actors in the project.
The production of Avasara Police 100 took more than four years as Bhagyaraj was working on multiple projects parallely. The film, following a rollercoaster ride, went on to become a hit. It was remade in Hindi as Gopi Kishan and in Kannada as Jagath Kiladi.
