Amid continued clutter over the Congress leadership, the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah-led Congress government will celebrate the completion of three years on Tuesday (May 19) with the ‘Pragathiyatta Karnataka’ (Karnataka towards development) convention at Tumakuru.

To mark the occasion, as many as 1.4 lakh beneficiaries will receive beneficiary certificates/government documents/title deeds, and various development works for Tumakuru will be launched at an estimated cost of ₹500 crore.

“The convention will witness the distribution of certificates/documents by the Revenue Department, and will have a celebration to mark the completion of three years. We gave a manifesto and promised to people that it would be realised in five years. We will tell the people the achievements of the government,” Home Minister G. Parameshwara told presspersons. Over the next two years, he said, the government will initiate work on the long-term promises made by the Congress.

He also denied allegations that he was using this platform as a show of strength on his home turf. “We will not say anything beyond the achievements of the government. We are not seeing it as a show of strength. We want to tell the people that we have walked the talk,” said Dr. Parameshwara. He refused to field questions on change of leadership and Cabinet reshuffle, stating that it was political and the party’s internal matter. On participation of any Central leaders from the Congress in the event, Dr. Parameshwara said that since it was a government function, no one from the high command would participate.

The State government had earlier organised functions and reached out to beneficiaries to celebrate anniversaries in Haveri and Hospete. According to a note from the Revenue Department, Tumakuru district, with 11 taluks and a population of 27 lakh, is the second-biggest district in the State. The event comes at a time when the Congress is internally besieged with the turf war over power between Mr. Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

On May 18, Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda and Dr. Parameshwara, who is also the in-charge Minister of Tumakuru district, inspected the arrangements for the convention, which is expected to draw a huge crowd.

Terming the convention as the Sadhaneya Samavesha (convention to mark achievements), Mr. Gowda said that documents pertaining to 13.33 lakh acres, which were in the name of the deceased across the State, have been registered in their family members’ names over the last three years. He added, “More than one lakh families will receive services/documents at Tumakuru. These include distribution of title deeds to about 20,000 families, distribution of khata documents to about 80,000 heirs of the deceased, and documents pertaining to podi durast to 7,000 farmers’ families.”
