Coimbatore unit of Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam has again called for a scientific study into the effects of wind turbines on rains in Southern Coimbatore.
G. Ranganathan, Coimbatore district unit president of Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam, said they were not convinced by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board’s reply last year that wind turbines didn’t cause environmental impact.
Over the years, promoters of wind farms have taken advantage of initiatives by the Centre, including concessional custom duty on certain components and raw materials used in making wind turbines, and graded waiver of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges till June 2028. Wind farms also receive technical support from National Institute of Wind Energy.
Farmers, however, claim that they were able to gauge a change in weather pattern after installation of wind turbines.
They contend that wind turbines caused increase in land surface temperature, and impacted rainfall, .
The farmers are seeking a detailed location-specific study based on their understanding that wind turbines, when the numbers increase, have the capacity to reduce local wind speeds and impact local climate.
