Efforts are under way to install a PET-CT (positron emission tomography–computed tomography) scan and other laboratory equipment at the 100-bed cancer block in the Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruppur.
District Collector Manish Narnaware recently took stock of the progress in the initiative, which entails an expenditure of ₹40 crore.
The 50,000 sq.ft. facility, on which ₹60 crore has been spent, is already functional. The block features a bunker structure, medical linear accelerator (LINAC-truebeam-dual energy) and internal radiation treatment- brachytherapy, among other equipment.
The block is a unique project carried out under the Namakku Naame Scheme.
The Tiruppur Rotary Public Welfare Trust mobilised a public funding of ₹5 crore as one-third share for the project carried out under public-private partnership.
The high incidence of cancer in the district with its huge industrial work force prompted the trust to carry out the initiative. The facility, officials said, would provide free cancer treatment under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.
