Postgraduate resident doctors at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, who had gone on a day’s strike on Tuesday over the college administration’s failure to pay them their monthly stipend, have threatened to resume the strike as many of them have yet to receive the stipend for the month of April.

Kerala Medical Postgraduates Association (KMPGA) said that due to administrative failure, over 200 resident doctors were yet to receive their stipend. The medical college administration has failed to verify and send the stipend bills to the treasury on time, which has resulted in the current situation, it said.

The KMPGA said it has officially informed the Principal and the Director of Medical Education that if the stipend bills were not cleared from the treasury by Thursday night, they will resume their strike on Friday and continue till every resident doctor receives the stipend.

The resident doctors said that despite repeated assurances from the authorities that the stipend bills would be forwarded to the treasury on time, the payment of stipend was being delayed every month.

The KMPGA has demanded immediate disciplinary action against the administrative staff at the college office who are responsible for the repeated delays in stipend payment. If the stipend bills for the month of May are not passed by the fifth working day of June, the resident doctors will serve a strike notice the very next day, the KMPGA warned.
