Customs officials have seized 5 kg of Methamphetamine worth ₹5 crore from an unclaimed cargo parcel at Chennai airport.
They have begun an investigation to find the network that has been trying to smuggle the narcotic substance abroad.
Since the parcel remained uncollected for long, security personnel contacted the customs and cargo authorities, who then examined the package.
They found that the parcel contained a white crystalline substance, which was passed off as a ‘medicinal chemical powder’. Further, they found that the shipping address and contact provided was fake. Forensic testing confirmed that the substance was methamphetamine.
Following this, a case was registered. Customs officials are examining the CCTV footage to identify who brought the parcel to the airport. Police sources said they suspected that the parcel was transported to Malaysia. Those who came to drop off the parcel must have left on seeing the increased security.
