The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) has instructed the Kokkayar grama panchayat secretary to prevent traffic disruptions on Kokkayar Boys Estate Road due to soil washing down from the estate and accumulating on the road. Chairperson Alexander Thomas issued this order to address the issue.
The order was issued following a complaint from Selas Cheriyan on behalf of the Meloram and Azhangad Residents’ Association, which stated that soil accumulation on the road was hindering travel.
The commission has already collected a report from the panchayat secretary, which stated that the Boys Estate manager has been instructed to prevent soil from flowing down from the estate and accumulating on the road. A subsequent verification found no current soil accumulation on the stretch.
The commission directed the petitioner to approach the Kokkayar panchayat secretary if the issue recurs. In such an event, the panchayat should hear both the petitioner and the estate manager, conduct a spot verification, and take further necessary action, stated the commission.
