The Health department in Kerala has sought another Centre of Excellence (CoE) for rare diseases in the State, to be set up at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode.
These centres are designated tertiary care hospitals recognised by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the diagnosis, treatment, and research into rare diseases under the National Policy for Rare Diseases. A financial help of up to ₹50 lakh is provided to each patient at these places. A Central expert team visited the Kozhikode MCH for inspection on April 27.
