A 25-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after jumping into a gorge at the Kolukkumalai tourism destination near Suryanelli in Munnar, along the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, on Tuesday morning. The deceased has been identified as N. Dravinesh, a resident of Abhiramapuram in Chennai. According to the police, the incident occurred around 7 a.m.
Dravinesh had arrived in Munnar on Monday as part of a 15-member group. The team trekked up the Kolukkumalai peak on Tuesday morning. When they reached the Lion Rock area, the youth suddenly jumped into the 700-foot-deep gorge.
Upon receiving information, the Santhanpara police, alongside Fire and Rescue Services personnel, rushed to the spot. They recovered the body from within the jurisdiction of the Kurangini police station in Tamil Nadu. Following an hours-long effort supported by Tamil Nadu officials, rescuers used ropes to pull the body up to the peak.
The body has been shifted to the Theni Medical College for a postmortem examination. Friends of the deceased stated that a relationship failure may have driven him to take the extreme step.
