Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary recently revoked the order earlier issued by his party (BJP) leader and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha in the previous regime headed by then CM Nitish Kumar, and reinstated about 224 State revenue junior staffs who has been on strike since months who were later put under suspension.
Mr. Sinha held the Land Reforms and Revenue portfolio in the previous government.
Hundreds of other officers of the department, were put under suspension. They are also on on a strike since they were not included in the revocation decision of the government. They have said that they would continue with their strike.
Both Mr. Sinha and Mr. Choudhary from the BJP were the Deputy Chief Ministers in the previous NDA government headed by Nitish Kumar. The political indifferences between both the leaders have been common talks in Bihar’s political circle and ahead of the new government formation, Mr. Sinha was said to be in the race for becoming the Chief Minister of the State.
After Mr. Choudhary took oath as BJP’s first Chief Minister in Bihar, tensions have simmered between Mr. Sinha and Mr. Choudhary. Recently, Mr Sinha’s security too was downgraded.
It was when Mr. Sinha was the Deputy Chief Minister of the State the 224 junior staffs of the department and other officers had gone on strike since February 2, 2026. They had briefly called off their strike on government’s assurances but later again on March 9, they went on agitation after the government allegedly refused to comply with their demands. Considering it as indiscipline, the government later suspended all the 224 department employees, including some officers.
However, the new Chief Minister of the State, Samrat Choudhary recently revoked the order on April 17, 2026 and ordered to reinstate the suspended junior striking employees. The additional secretary of the department has written to all District Magistrates of the State regarding this.
However, the officers, including some suspended officers of the department who had gone on strike along with their junior staffs on February 2, 2026 against the then State Cabinet’s decision, to “create the new post of Sub-Divisional Revenue Officer (SDRO) on par with DCLRs said that the new post of such officers would not only “dilute their powers but also prove as roadblocks in their promotion”.
They too had briefly called off their strike but, again resumed it on March 9 alleging that the state government has “failed to honor assurances given to them during negotiations”. Mr. Sinha, though, had alleged that there could be a “conspiracy” behind the officers’ strike and even issued warning to them they would face strict action.
“We would continue with our strike. Even the Patna High court, earlier, had observed in our favour on this. The government should rethink and throw fresh light on our demands”, said a striking member of the Bihar Revenue Service Association (United), preferring anonymity.
