Authorities in Coimbatore district have initiated action to close over 60 liquor outlets operated by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) following the State government’s order issued on Tuesday to shut shops functioning within 500 metres of educational institutions, places of worship and bus stands.
According to officials, the district has a total of 284 TASMAC outlets - 156 in Coimbatore North and 128 in Coimbatore South. Of these, 69 outlets — 48 in the North division and 21 in the South division — have been identified for closure as they are located within the 500-metre proximity limit.
Officials said the number of outlets identified for closure could increase as TASMAC personnel are continuing inspections to identify shops falling within the prohibited distance and assess logistical aspects involved in shifting or shutting the outlets. In the first phase, the already identified shops would be closed within two weeks.
As part of the first phase of action, four TASMAC outlets bearing shop numbers 1557, 1603, 1846 and 1662 were closed by authorities on Tuesday.
Among them, shop number 1662 is located opposite the Singanallur bus stand in Coimbatore city.
