The Hindu Bureau · 2026-06-18 · via The Hindu: Latest News today from India and the World, Breaking news, Top Headlines and Trending News Videos.

To facilitate stormwater drain work at Elephant Gate Road by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), new traffic diversions will be in effect from 20 June, Greater Chennai Traffic Police has said.

The vehicles which come from Chennai Central and Choolai roundabout towards Perambur, Vyasarpadi, and Pulianthope will be diverted to Hajj building junction towards Demellows Road to reach Perambur. There are restrictions for these vehicles to ply on the Elephant Gate Road. This road will be one way for the vehicles that come from Basin Bridge towards Choolai roundabout and Chennai Central. Similarly, vehicles from Chennai Central and Choolai roundabout towards Basin Bridge Road will head via Elephant Gate signal, Elephant Gate New bridge, Wall Tax Road, and Moolakothalam Junction.

Vehicles from Perambur, Vyasarpadi, and Pulianthope and going towards Chennai Central can ply as usual via Pulianthope High Road and Demellows Road.

New U-turn facilities

To decongest the 200 feet road stretch between Thathan Kuppam Junction and Rajamangalam Junction, three new U-turns have been created between Thathan Kuppam and Rajamangalam. It will be implemented on a trial basis from 20 June. The U-turns have been established—opposite to Indian Oil petrol bunk at Thathan Kuppam, opposite to old DRJ Hospital, and opposite to Karupatti Coffee at Rajamangalam. Vehicles from Thathan Kuppam South Railway Road can take a left and utilise the U-turn near the old DRJ Hospital to head to their destinations. Vehicles from Water Canal Road can turn left, use the U-turn near the old DRJ Hospital to reach their destinations. Commuters from Senthil Nagar Junction and Vivekananda Nagar Main Road may take a left turn, take the U-turn near Karupatti Coffee to proceed to their destination. Vehicles from Senthil Nagar Third Main Road can take a left turn and then the U-turn near the old DRJ Hospital. Vehicles from Thathan Kuppam side can turn left, then utilise the U-turn created near the Indian Oil petrol bunk.
