Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Tuesday launched an adult vaccination programme at the State-run Sir C.V. Raman General Hospital and urged vulnerable groups, particularly senior citizens and those with co-morbidities, to make use of the initiative.
The programme, supported by Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding, includes administration of pneumococcal and influenza vaccines aimed at preventing serious respiratory and infectious diseases.
Speaking after inaugurating the programme, the Minister said the pneumococcal vaccine should be taken by people above 65 years of age, especially those suffering from heart ailments or weakened immunity.
“This vaccine can help prevent severe infectious diseases and reduce complications among vulnerable groups,” he said.
Mr. Rao said influenza vaccines were also being made available for people between six months and 65 years of age. He noted that the vaccine offers protection against multiple viral strains and could help reduce seasonal infections during the monsoon.
“With the onset of monsoon, taking these vaccines can help prevent several illnesses and reduce hospital admissions. It will be especially beneficial for people with respiratory conditions,” he said.
Free finerenone tablets
The Minister also highlighted the State’s rollout of free finerenone tablets for Type-2 diabetes patients at government hospitals.
He said the drug could help reduce heart-related deaths and kidney complications among diabetic patients, many of whom remained unaware of associated risks affecting the kidneys, heart and retina.
During the visit, Mr. Rao also inaugurated five special wards and seven semi-special wards at the hospital, stating that strengthening facilities in government hospitals remained a priority for the State government.
