District Collector Shikha Surendran has ordered an immediate probe into the incident in which an elephant went on a rampage in Thrissur, and directed the Divisional Forest Officer and Social Forestry ACF (Assistant Conservator of Forest) to submit reports urgently.
Officials said tranquillizing the elephant was not feasible at the time as it was on the move. The tahsildar and village officer have been asked to quickly assess the damage to vehicles and property. The elephant, owned by Sivadath, a Thiruvananthapuram native, is insured, and authorities have assured compensation to all affected. Further action will be based on Forest department findings on possible legal violations. An emergency review meeting has also been held to expedite the process.
In Peringavu village, five scooters, a car and compound walls of five houses were damaged in the incident. In Thrissur village limits, a post office building’s front truss work was damaged, along with a car, an autorickshaw and sections of the Town Hall fencing.
