Shivamogga-Bhadravathi Urban Development Authority chairman H.S. Sundaresh has said the authority has resolved to take up projects to beautify, enhance greenery, address traffic requirements and ensure security in Shivamogga and Bhadravathi towns.

In a press conference in Shivamogga, on Tuesday, Sundaresh said consultations had already been held with senior district-level officials from departments such as the City Corporation, Agriculture, Revenue and Forest departments, besides elected representatives, industrialists, members of civil society organisations and the public, and their suggestions had been incorporated.

The authority has already prepared action plans for the development of selected parks on the city outskirts and initiated works. Several industrialists and organisations have shown interest in maintaining the developed parks, he said.

Skywalks

The authority is also focusing on the rejuvenation of lakes within the city and has taken up works worth several crores of rupees. Mr. Sundaresh said 15 lakes had been identified for development. Once the Revenue Department, City Corporation and other agencies clear encroachments, demarcate boundaries and hand over the lakes, SUDA will begin fencing and restoration works.

To address increasing traffic congestion, particularly at busy circles, the authority is considering the installation of skywalks and escalators after obtaining technical advice and government approval. SUDA has reserved ₹15 crore for the purpose.

The authority is also planning to install statues of eminent personalities and national icons at traffic circles and develop green spaces around them. Alternative measures to regulate crowds at such locations are also being explored. A sum of ₹8 crore has been earmarked for these initiatives.

To curb accidents, unpleasant incidents and criminal activities, the authority has requested the police department to identify suitable locations for the installation of CCTV cameras on major roads and city outskirts. An amount of ₹5 crore has been reserved for the project, he said.

Mr. Sundaresh said SUDA also proposes to construct a G+7 residential complex comprising 1,200 houses at sites already identified within its jurisdiction. A proposal has been submitted to the government and construction will commence after approval.

He added that landowners in Gopishettikoppa had expressed willingness to part with 104 acres for development. Owners of 32 acres have already signed agreements for development under a 50:50 sharing model, and work on the layout is expected to begin in the coming months.

SUDA Commissioner B.R. Manjunath was present at the press conference.
