Three women were arrested in connection with an alleged illegal sex determination test and abortion involving a 25-year-old woman from Attur in Salem district on Thursday (May 21, 2026).
Police sources said the woman, who was four months pregnant, allegedly underwent sex determination and abortion at a private hospital in Salem. Her husband is an agricultural labourer and the couple already have two daughters.
The matter came to the attention of Joint Director of Health Services S.P. Nandhini, who conducted an inquiry into the incident. The inquiry revealed that three women from the Thalaivasal area and a person from Kallakurichi district were allegedly involved in facilitating the abortion. Based on a complaint lodged by health department officials, the police arrested Madhubala, Bhuvaneswari and Gowri of Thalaivasal.
