Rapid Metro services in Gurugram came to a halt for nearly 45 minutes on Thursday evening after a major transformer failure at the 220 kV Sector-72 substation triggered widespread power outages across the city.
Services were disrupted from 7.50 p.m. to 8.33 p.m., Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) confirmed. Once power was restored by Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (HVPNL) through the Sector-72 substation, normal operations resumed. Dramatic videos circulating on social media showed passengers evacuating and walking dangerously along the tracks during the blackout. The disruption affected the entire Rapid Metro network, which relies on power supplied from the Sector-72 facility.
The outage also hit seven substations feeding parts of Gurugram — Sectors 15, 38, 44, 46, 52, 56, and the Maruti 66kV powerhouse. Residential areas in Sectors 38 to 57, Sector-15 Part-1 and 2, and Sector-18 faced power cuts as a result.
According to Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) spokesperson Sanjay Chugh, the fault occurred in both 220 kV circuits at the PGCIL Sector-72 facility after the CT, or Current Transformer, of one circuit sustained damage. The second circuit was restored within 30 minutes and is currently carrying the entire load, prompting authorities to warn of precautionary cuts in some areas.
HVPNL and DHBVN teams are working to repair the damaged transformer, a process expected to take 8 to 10 hours. Full supply is expected to resume late night.
While Rapid Metro services were suspended, DMRC said Yellow Line operations were maintained through a standby substation and ran normally during the period.
