The Women’s League of Tamil Desiya Periyakkam has welcomed the TVK government’s move to close down 717 liquor shops operated by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac).
In a statement on May 15, League’s general secretary M. Senthamizhselvi welcomed Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s announcement that 717 wine shops located near the places of worship, educational institutions, and bus stands across the State would be shut down.
While insisting that the closure of 717 shops be ensured within a fortnight, as announced by the Chief Minister, the League urged that ‘backdoor’ sales of liquor, as it had happened during the previous DMK regime, should be curbed.
Welcoming the formation of Special Force for Women’s Safety, the League observed that its objective could be achieved only through total Prohibition.
