The severed hand of a young man was saved with the timely intervention by the Apollo Hospitals doctors. The man suffered a complete traumatic wrist amputation while cutting coconuts and was rushed to the hospital within the critical golden period, enabling doctors to save the limb.
The rare and complex microsurgical re-plantation procedure was successfully performed by the microsurgical team comprising of Dr. P.R.K. Prasad and Dr. Allu Bhavya Sree.
The surgery involved precise fixation of bones and meticulous repair of arteries, veins, tendons and nerves to restore blood circulation to the amputated hand. Following the surgery, the patient was shifted to the ICU for close monitoring, where encouraging signs such as restoration of perfusion and flickering finger movements were observed.
The doctors said clean-cut wrist amputations can often be successfully replanted if treated within the crucial time window. They stressed the importance of proper preservation of the severed part by wrapping it in a clean cloth, placing it in a waterproof cover and keeping it in a cooled environment without direct contact with ice.
The patient is presently stable and the replanted hand is showing promising recovery, doctors added.
