A special awareness programme on women’s safety and security was organised at prominent locations in Hampi on Monday by the Department of Women and Child Development in association with the Women Empowerment Unit, Akka Pade and Vijaya Mahila Suraksha Pade teams.

Awareness was created among the public and women tourists around the Virupaksha Temple, Hampi Bazaar (Ratha Beedi) and the bus stand area in the UNESCO World Heritage site regarding safety measures and available support systems for women.

District Mission Coordinator Vidya and Gender Specialist Annapurna, who participated in the programme, explained how women could avail themselves of the benefits offered under various Central and State government schemes such as Mission Shakti, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Sakhi One Stop Centres.

Sakhi Centre Administrator Basheera B. briefed participants about the support and assistance provided by the centre to women in distress.

The organisers also informed the public about emergency helpline numbers, including Women’s Helpline 181, Police Emergency Service 112, Child Helpline 1098 and Cyber Crime Helpline 1930.

Team members also created awareness about the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Members of Akka Pade and Vijaya Mahila Suraksha Pade interacted with women tourists at the venue and encouraged them to remain alert and confident while travelling.

Department officials and members of the participating teams were present during the programme.
